Accelerating the North-South Railway: Key Upgrades Completed, Reducing Journey Times

The project to renovate and upgrade essential infrastructure on the North-South railway line is entering its final stages, bringing positive changes to the national railway system. This project is part of the transport sector’s ongoing efforts to improve safety, increase train speeds, and shorten the journey between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

With a total investment of approximately VND 7 trillion, the project focuses on renovating and upgrading weak bridges, tunnels, reinforcing trackbeds, and modernizing signaling systems at sections with the most challenging operational conditions. One of the areas directly benefiting is the central region’s railway section, which includes the Hoa Duyet station area in Ha Tinh province.

The main objectives of the project include:

  • Enhancing Safety: Replacing degraded bridges and tunnels, and reinforcing embankments and track foundations to ensure absolute operational safety.
  • Increasing Operational Speed: Post-upgrade, the average speed for passenger trains is expected to reach 80-90 km/h, and 50-60 km/h for freight trains, a significant improvement from previous levels.
  • Shortening Journey Times: The synchronization of infrastructure and increased speeds help reduce travel time along the entire route, boosting operational efficiency and the competitiveness of railway transport.

According to reports from the Railway Project Management Unit (under the Ministry of Transport), many construction and renovation packages for weak bridges were largely completed in 2024 and have been put into operation, demonstrating clear effectiveness.

The completion of this project is not only a technical step forward but also affirms the commitment of the Government and the Ministry of Transport to revitalizing and developing the railway industry. It aims to build a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation system, contributing to the nation’s socio-economic development.
